Reflecting on my Climbing

I have spent the last week on a wall (for the most part alone) establishing new traditional, mixed, and sport climbs. Upon reflecting about the experience I have come to the conclusion that I get the most satisfaction from the new routing experience. Discovering the unknown possibilities, identifying a path through the maze of features in the rock, rising to the occasion of the route’s challenges and finally sharing it with others.

The only other experience that I feel is close in satisfaction for me is onsighting. I love the challenge of the unknown. I love getting pumped and trying to depump. I love figuring out sequences and going for it. I love committing to my decisions and seeing where they take me. I love getting scared and feeling elation the first time making it through a crux. I love getting exposed and feeling the wind and sun and rock under my fingers. I love making it to the anchors without any strength in my muscles.

Get outside and climb.
