At the high school that I work at we are constantly trying to develop our learners skills in the traditional subjects. This year however our district is looking at developing the whole student. Persistence is one of the life skills that I really try to encourage with the group of students that I get daily contact with in the classroom, but it is my Outdoor Club where I really get to push them into the uncomfortable zone of persisting when you are extremely fatigued.
Our latest adventure was to take them out to the local mica mine in the snow. Then ascend a trail less mountain through very deep (3ft deep) snow without a trail. Then rappel down the other side a few hundred feet and take the cliff line back to the trail and the parking lot about a mile away. It was epic for them to say the least. They were successful but we had to nix the rappelling due to the length of time that it took to climb the mountain. I am proud of each and everyone of them for persisting and not giving up. It was cold, wet, slippery, and cold, wet and slippery and they never quit. This is what we want to see from our learners.
