This past winter I spent days establishing a new bigwall route in Zion. Now that my spring break is just about here I am looking to peak so that I can free the nearly 2200ft route full of 100% new terrain and challenges. BUT, the wall is closed for nesting birds and will reopen whenever. It has stung my motivation and forced me to change what I have been working towards for the last 5 months. So other than getting over it here is what I learned:
- Stay positive. Got to see the light at the end of the tunnel, otherwise you are pissed off way too long.
- Have a back-up plan. Realize that you still have the time designated for your goal and adjust appropriately.
- Stay fit. Don’t throw away your fitness because it won’t be applied toward what it has meant for, redirect it and see what you can pull off.
- Have a super back up plan. Now that I have my back up plan ready to happen, there is another loop that was just thrown into the mix. I will have to figure this one out and fast. I will have to remember as my friends have said, “the rock will be there tomorrow”.
Here are a few places where I think new routes will go. What possibilities do you see out there?
